New discoveries

Hello.

We have just put the finishing touches on some of our special "bsides" that will randomly appear throughout 2008. I have never been a fan of the concept of b sides as I always believed that if a song was not amazing, then it should lie dormant until it became incredible. That being said, my concept of b sides was completely changed over the course of the last couple of months as i realised that a) i was very fond of some of the tunes that just missed out on the album, and b) that there are so many forgotten songs that are crying out for a new interpretation. With regards to reinterpretation, there is a fine line between destroying a song and breathing new life into to. So it was a delicate situation. To decide which songs were appropriate to cover, we spent weeks and weeks listening to all the weird and "flop" releases by all our favourite artists and acts that people had said "you should listen to this" and never did. Not surprisingly, we found many tunes that deserve to be heard and hours and hours of worthy music that blew our minds. I guess that it's easy to listen to the stuff that you're used to, but occasionally it's worth going to those weird places. Maybe it's best to never go back...

AB.

Art Art Art

Hello.

The artist responsible for all our amazing artwork, images, posters and paraphenalia, Kareena Zerefos, is having her first exhibition very soon. Word on the street is that apparently AB might be playing a short acoustic set as well on the opening night...

For all you sydneysiders, here are the details:

Opening event: Tuesday 3rd June from 6 - 9pm Entry and drinks are free!

The exhibition will bring a collection of Kareena's recent illustrative work to the MTV gallery in East Sydney (4-16 Yurong st, East Sydney). Themes of isolation and escapism, through the depiction of children and their imagination will be explored through the artworks.

Works will include twenty five framed pieces in pencil, biro, gouache, ink and letraset on archival paper, as well as a series of pencil sketches on pianola scrolls. Gallery installations of familiar object scenes will create a warm environment that draws those who attend into their own imaginative memory box – a space of cosy nostalgia you may like to spend a little time exploring.

The opening event will feature a special acoustic set from Alex Burnett of Sparkadia. 'Postcards' [their debut album being released May 31] features Kareena's artwork.

The exhibition continues Wednesday 4th June to Tuesday 10th June.

see you then.

love,

sparkadia x
