UK Tour Blog 3

We returned to London, in fact, Clapham, where we were lucky enough to be staying at Kyle's girlfriend's father's place that was amazingly empty. Since when do you have a house to yourself in London!? It was weird to have a room (and a bed) to ourselves. Ha. We spent some time walking around London before we jumped in our van and drove to the lovely seaside town of Brighton. We checked out the pier (beautiful), the acquarium(pretty average...) and made some new friends. We then went to Brighton Audio and met all of Vampire weekend (who were lovely) and got involved with soundchecking and all of that pre show stuff.

The show at brighton was easily the most fun on the tour as we were playing on the tiniest stage that we've ever played on in our entire lives. This was such a contrast to the massive stadium stages from our european dates and it was more hilarious as we couldn't see our instruments, each other- let alone the crowd as the lights operator had gone completely overboard with the smoke machine. It was like we were in a war zone with all the smoke everywhere. I thought 'nam was bad! Ridiculous.

The following day we went to Oxford and experienced the beauty of the village and felt a little underdressed and uneducated. The oxford academy was a relaxed affair with a similar crowd and vibe to the night before except the excessively powerful smoke machine was sorely missed. We missed that blanket of smoke and the inability to breathe...Vampire Weekend played a blistering set and since we had played their album to death in the van, we sung along to many of their tunes..."blake's got a new face..." Some of us snuck into the end of the kooks show that was happening below us. I guess that night there was a slight Kooks vs VW battle - Who would win...?

The next day was our final show, that being our headline show. After five weeks of excess and limited sleep we were becoming a ragged bunch. The final show at the metro definitely had a great sense of excitement and it was rad to play to old fans and new fans. Following the show we had many a pint to cap off our second uk tour. We went to some place called the phoenix bar where many a celeb had gathered. Apart from gushing at french chanson, soko, i desperately tried to think of something worthwhile to say to billy bragg, but in the end i had nothing...Some random old man declared that Nick was "a true thoroughbred", we met a man who had impregnated his eye...!? and Nick ended up clashing with members of Kate Nash's band in the stairwell. Apparently they weren't allowed in as it was too full, so when nick went outside for a smoke they tried to stop him getting back in - as to better their chances and claimed that they were "from the band" and that Nick was some "nobody". Huh! Well he was also from "a band" and his "foundations" were rocked.

Instead of crying, he pushed those punks out of the way (i think he should have been a little more forceful...if you know what i mean..) and joined us back inside away from the losers outside-who never got in. Karma boys, karma. Nick vs Kate Nash Band = Nick wins, in fact, dominates.

Many more battles, tales and shows to come.

We hope to see all you all UK peeps in mid June-ish.

Australian Too Much To Do Tour begins april 23 for those in the land of oz.

till then,

UK Tour Blog 2

Following Kyle's mid tour crisis (which i admit was completely induced and then encouraged by us) we were lucky to have a day off. A "day off" on tour can be much needed when you start to have groundhog day moments, dreams and then can't really work out what is going on...since we were beginning to finish each other's sentences we decided to have some time alone. As we woke up in Manchester, i was keen to walk the grey streets and check out the hacienda and all things related to tony wilson, martin hannet, joy division, new order and factory records. After downing a "full english" at the "Koffee Pot", which is the best breakfast joint in manchester, i was kindly informed that the hacienda is now converted apartments and that for a "cool million quid" i could own the penthouse. Um. no. So i found this incredible toy store and bought a jimmy page figurine as an end of tour present for kyle. This figurine was amazing! amazing. Thankfully it depicted the mid to late 70's period of led zep which jimmy was wearing a one piece suit with dragons on his legs. Apparently when led zep played in london this year, both plant and page looked like wizards out of lord of the rings...

After walking the streets and getting well depressed with the bleak skies and the concrete jungle that surrounded me, i phoned dave, nick and tiff and we decided to go to liverpool. Why not?

By the time we got organised and i got over my jimmy page, eddy from iron maiden and kurt cobain figurines, it was night time and we went to see Emmy the Great and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly at the liverpool carling academy (i think thats what it was called). We hung out with emmy and her band - who were lovely - and then nick made an inspired decision to check out this jazz club that was recommended by someone's friend's cousin's daughter's best mate. So we drove back to manchester. When we arrived at the door, there was no one policing the money, so we all snuck in and experienced jazz - howard moon style. After the show, Nick got talking to the drummer and found out that he used to play in Texas "I don't need a lover...i just need a friend" and now spend most summers playing to stadiums in spain. Awesome. More drinking and jazz followed and then the day was over.

Leeds was our final destination with J.E.W. and we nearly didn't make it. On route, a tyre of ours completely exploded and we spent a good few hours freezing on the highway until a roadside helper person arrived and sorted it all out.

Leeds was incredible. Beautiful city. We played at the leeds university (the same place as the who's "live at leeds" record. The crowd were wild and i ended up wearing some guys skiing hat. I hope that he got it back....

After the show we had too many drinks with jimmy band and the jimmy crew and ended up playing a ghetto dice game called see-low. Has anyone played this before? It's totally deadly. Dave and Tiff won many many pounds, i on the other hand, lost all my money and as a result had to beg for food for the next few days. Dave and Tiff were kind enough to give me their scraps after their meals.

UK Tour Blog 1

Driving back to the UK had a strangely familiar "home" feeling about it. Maybe after a month of feeling like idiots not being able to speak any other languages through greater Europe (except cosmopolitan AB and his French in Belgium), having our language back made it feel home-y. Or perhaps it's deeper than that and sub-consciously to do with our convict heritage. Actually, It was probably because there are so God-damn-many Australians in the UK it was hard to find a British accent! Whatever it was, being back in the UK was a good feeling.

SOUTHAMPTON

We played Southampton to start with; to a very large, beautiful, yet box-like room. The sound was flying all over the place! It was a grand space, though. We didn't get much of a chance to have a look around town because we arrived so late but there was a good/tough vibe at the show from some eager Jimmy Eat World fans, depending on how you look at it. Could i be any more cryptic? Anyway, good times in Southampton, our first bite of the UK this time round.

BRIXTON ACADEMY

Next stop Brixton Academy and can i just say, woah. What a trip! It was pretty mind blowing to be playing such an institution. The surrealism wasn't lost on any of us. We all had brand spankin' new do's by this point too. (It took us this long into the tour to find the time to get a hair cut - and our laissez-faire fate was proving dire, even by Australian standards.) One thing I've noticed about European gigs is that people are usually there much earlier than Aussie audiences (which is ace for us, supporting). The line to get into the Academy was wrapped around the building and down the street. And it was bloody cold. They breed Londoners tough, I tell ya. There was pretty much a full house by the time we went on and we... Had. A. Ball. AB and I practiced stadium-rock moves like running up and down the stage doing high-fives mid song...but thankfully for all involved we didn't go through with it. It was such a beautiful venue to play and one I sure wont be forgetting any time soon.

BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham proved itself to be the most Antarctic of all its counterparts. It was probably just a really cold day but my God, i thought we were going to have to go on in our snow jackets, which had been reserved for Scandinavia. The crowd packed in though and the room heated up. It was another awesome room with a balcony section (which i really like coz it reminds me of the AC/DC music vid for thunderstruck...except a bit less - You Tube it and you'll get what i mean

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvoeeq-BH4w

ANYWAY! Despite the cold we received a toasty warm reception and had a few clappers - when the tambi came in - down the front, too. Awesome. We love Birmingham accents. We'll be back soon.

MANCHESTER

Manchester is such a cool place, in'it? Kyle wont think so. We had a day off there, and after a rare sleep in and sniff around the streets, we came back with a couple of rock-god figurines and a full English breakfast, then headed off to the Uni for our gig. So, by now it's nearing the end of the tour, right? And anyone in their right mind, by this point, should have gone mad spending all day, every day with us. Kyle our tour manager did. Kyle's quite the legend but by this point we were also mad and sick of his class-based English antics (we were regarded the lowest class, all Australians, ALL Australians being convicts) and decided to try and make him quit. "Quit, quit, quit!" We chanted, as he lay across school chairs, eating pomegranates (for anti-oxidants. His Dad is a nutritionist). Lucky for us, Kyle didn't quit. And we saw the tour out in style - i.e a hot pink 'people mover'. Thanks Kyle. And thank you Manchester.
